The Physics study program FMIPA Untan began its academic activities in 2002 based on the Letter of the Director General of Higher Education, Ministry of National Education Number 3494/D/T/2001 dated November 9, 2001 concerning the permit to organize the learning process for the S1 Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics Study Programs. This permit was then extended in 2004 with the issuance of the Letter of the Director General of Higher Education, Ministry of National Education Number 2320/D/T/2004, then extended again in 2008 based on the Letter of the Director General of Higher Education, Ministry of National Education Number 1131/D/T/2008. Starting in 2012, the implementation of learning activities in the Physics Study Program is based on the Letter of the Rector of Tanjungpura University on behalf of the Director General of Higher Education Number 11185/D/T/KN/2012.

The academic title that is entitled to be attached behind the name of a graduate of the Physics study program FMIPA Untan is Sarjana Sains (Bachelor of Science) (S.Si.). Academic degrees are awarded if students have completed all obligations and/or tasks assigned in taking education and have completed administrative and financial obligations.

Since 2008, the Physics Study Program has been accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Higher Education (BAN-PT) with a B predicate. Currently, the Physics Study Program has received accreditation from the Independent Accreditation Institute for Natural Sciences and Formal Sciences (LAMSAMA) with a Good rating based on Decree Number 035/SK/Lamsama/Akred/S/IV/2023 which is valid until May 29, 2028.

Currently, there are 13 lecturers in the Physics Study Program. There are 8 lecturers with Doctoral (S3) qualifications and 5 Masters (S2) qualifications. Of the 13 lecturers, 12 have civil servant status and 1 has non-civil servant teaching staff status. Furthermore, of the 13 civil servant lecturers, 2 people have the functional position of associate professor, 11 people have the functional position of assistant professor, and 2 people have the functional position of lecturer. To carry out academic activities, the Physics department is led by a Head of Department and assisted by a Secretary of the Department, along with the Coordinator of Physics Study Program and supported by three Heads of Laboratories.
